I had one scammer try to buy a microwave--I led him on until he sent a huge check--then he called from a different country and i told him sorry I had decided to keep all the money for myself---to which he replied yelling that the money was his and he wanted it--to which I said then then you should not have sent me the money--he said I will call the cops I said go ahead---he then stopped calling---crazy people

this is the problem: 100% of people that reply to my ad are scammers!

how can I make my results better with real people to reply to me instead of scammers.

Should I offer telephone number?

I noticed one of the ways to get a legitimate response is to say in the ad include some type of key word in the header field so that you know that it is a real person responding and not a bot, etc.

Boston Craigslist seems to be an atomic wasteland.

why? I have been thinking of moving there and checking out employment ads as well as housing. It seems legit to me.

I have been scammed on one employment ad, got a legitimate response from another. The housing ones are probably ok, I just have not delved into them really, but most of those are for roommates instead.

I wondered the same thing, Mike. I'm guessing she didn't attempt to cash the check.

Almost 100% of the employment ads on Craigslist are false. Most of them ask for your resume (which includes your home address, and telephone number) and some go as far as requiring a 'credit check' before taking you into consideration for the position.
TAKE CAUTION!! if you are considering using Craigslist for employment!!

On the not of selling things, I sold my saxophone a year ago on there. The first time I posted it I never got a legitimate hit, but the second time I included better photos and a more detailed description and sold it the same day. It's kind of hit or miss. I would recommend re-posting every other day or so to make sure it's fresh for anyone who is looking.

Nah - those checks are no good anyway. It'd bounce. It's not worth the paper it's written on. So no scam by charity.

I have had some good and bad experiences with Craigslist. There are real ads and real buyers that use Craigslist properly. As previously stated here, you need to let buyers know up front what you expect and how you will deal with them and ignore those who still seek to scam or spam you.

I rarely use craigslist anymore for very reasons mentioned here, however it does have good source of real estate, employment, etc ads that can be useful to those relocating to area. You can view ads throughout US and other countries as well.

I'd like to see some changes through Craigslist, which may come over time, such as eliminating much of spam, etc and requiring users to register to use their service. I'd also like to see additional monitoring of ads being placed to "weed" out those ads that aren't real, etc.

Samorex,

I'm still kind of new to craigslist, but you can go to this link to find out anything about it:

When I was unemployed back in 2007 I searched on craigslist for jobs and I got at least one interview from there. Seems to be more legitimate where I live I guess. I hit "report spam" on every job ad I saw that was fake.

SaraChristine:

I found my current job at a legal document service here in the Los Angeles area through Craigslist, after 18 months of unemployment. There are definitely a lot of scammers on that site, but if you have good discernment you can weed them out pretty quickly. Basically if it sounds too fishy or suspicious, it is.

Craigslist's biggest shortcoming is that it follows the idealistic but impractical liberal honor-system idea of letting the users decide which ads to report as scams and frauds instead of moderating the boards like here on Crosswalk. However, the Bible tells us that without godly guidance, consensus sucks. Cases in point: when the stubborn Israelites wanted a king just like the other countries to brag about and lead them into battle (1 Samuel), or when the crowds were whipped up into a frenzy by the Pharisees to demand Jesus' crucifixion.

My Dear Princess:

I replied to literally hundreds of job ads on Craigslist and sent out as many resumes in the past year and a half, and got about a dozen interviews before landing my current job. The economy out here in California is still pretty bad, and I have run into laid-off executives having to settle for even fast-food or warehouse jobs because nothing else is available. Companies, alas, can afford to be choosy and cherry-pick which candidate out of hundreds might be worth a looksie.

Thanks for being a "warrior princess" in reporting job ads that looked like spam or fraudulent. They probably were.
